I have to give it to Hasbro back in the day. After the huge effort you put in convincing your parents or whomever to buy you your favorite Transformer, they stick in all these mail in offers and the dreaded but awesome CHECKLIST! It’s not just a list of toys, it’s a full colored catalog of what they offered! I was (and probably is) a weird kid back in the day. I use to collect the “Service Merchandise”, “JC Penny”, and “BEST” mail order catalogs for their toy section. They usually had the most awesome catalogs of the latest Transformers and GI JOE with pictures. But that’s a different story for another time.

Remember these?

I did a lot of day dreaming looking at these. Here they are in chronological order:

Generation 1: Wave 1 ~1984

The line up was very small. They had room to print a drawing of a battle on the back of the catalog.

The basic line up of the first wave. The OG’s!

Favorites from this wave: All the Decepticons, Optimus Prime, Blue Streak, Prowl, Sideswipe, Jazz, Wheeljack!

Generation 1: Wave 2 ~ 1985

Autobots still outnumbered the Deceptions in toys. The line up expanded almost twice as much. Autobots were on one side, the Decepticons were on the other. They posterized a cheesy battle scene on the Deception side with actual toys this time around.

Autobots side

Decepticons side

Favorites from this wave: Constructicons (Devastator, Astrotrain, Blitzwing, Omega Supreme, Jetfire, Dinobots

Generation 1: Wave 3 ~1986

This was the generation after the feature length movie came out. Post Unicron.

Autobot side:

Decepticon side:

Favorites from this wave: Predacons (Predaking), Cyclonus, Trypticon, Metroplex, Sky Lynx, Aerialbots (Superion)

Generation 1: Wave 4 ~ 1986+

This wave added the rest from the post Unicron generation and the new additions from the “Rebirth” mini series that ended the US/North American run of the cartoon.

Favorites from this wave: Fortress Maximus, Technobots (Computron), Terrorcons (Abominus), Scorponok

The toys had a great run. After this last wave, they started recycling old robots with new powers. (Powermasters, Pretenders, etc.). G1 is still the best.

  1. Man these catalogs bring back some memories of hours spent studying, plotting and hoping. Transformers was one of very few toylines that truly got even cooler as time went on. I remember admiring the later combiners to no end: The Terrorcons especially. I also remember absolutely nobody in my circle of friends encountering any of those second wave Deluxe Insecticons despite looking amazing in the photos.

  2. Just desire to say your article is as amazing. The clarity on your put up is simply cool and that i could assume you’re a professional in this subject. Fine along with your permission let me to snatch your RSS feed to keep updated with coming near near post. Thank you one million and please continue the rewarding work.
